Rating: - It isn't new, but still a great book
I bought this book while preparing for a business trip. I had been looking at it for a few months and hadn't had the free time to get into something. Once I opened it at the airport, time disappeared. Don't be afraid of this book: the title is what I would consider typical Heinlein -- not a lot to do with the story itself.
You have murder, mystery, politics, intrigue... throw in some advanced technology, sprinkle with space and time travel... and you've got something rather interesting. ... Read More
Rating: - A crazy way to start off your marriage
This is one of those books you wish you could stay up all night reading because it is so totally outrageous when it comes to what is happening. What makes this so completely interesting is that most of this book takes place within a week of time, with all that action crammed into one week of a newly married couple who just happens to be slated for being killed, and people keep on trying, from darts through the heart at dinner, to the computer on the rent a space car crashing, to having to lie doggo for ... Rating: - Good at first then suddenly it made no sense whatsoever...
I read this after reading Heinlein's Starship Trooper. I had great difficulty in understanding Starship Trooper. Not so much as comprehension, but rather the vernacular used by Heinlein caused me to re-read many paragraphs. The Cat Who Walks Through Walls is no exception to Heinlein's strange vernacular. Perhaps it's fine for others, but not for me.
At first, the book was amazing. It sounded like a grand adventure. Then when the characters got to the planet in the other dimension, I became ... Read More
Rating: - If you loved THE MOON IS A HARSH MISTRESS.....
you will probably like this one.
First, if you have never read any of Heinlein's books do NOT begin with this one! Many characters of Heinlein's earlier books turn up here, including the infamous Lazurus Long and his ever expanding family. Beginning with this novel will only lead to frustration. Those who have read the earlier books, particularly THE MOON IS A HARSH MISTRESS and METHUSELAH'S CHILDREN will probably enjoy this one and the bigger the Heinlein fan the more the reader will enjoy ... Rating: - Very, very unsatisfying
It is undoubtedly true that earlier Heinlein works need to be read to fully appreciate this story, but, even so, it really doesn't work. The beginning of the book has a lot of promise: some clever dialogue, an intriguing first 50 or so pages. It's clear going to be a bit of an absurd tale, and humor and self-awareness at that point seem to indicate that the rest of the book will remain a fast-paced, silly adventure.
The pace remains fast, but the story simply falls apart and never recovers.
