Editorial Review:

Product DescriptionPolice chief of a small Massachusetts town, Cameron McDonald makes the toughest arrest of his life when his own cousin Jamie comes to him and confesses outright that he has killed his terminally ill wife out of mercy.

Now, a heated murder trial plunges the town into upheaval, and drives a wedge into a contented marriage: Cameron, aiding the prosecution in their case against Jamie, is suddenly at odds with his devoted wife, Allie -- seduced by the idea of a man so in love with his wife that he'd grant all her wishes, even her wish to end her life. And when an inexplicable attraction leads to a shocking betrayal, Allie faces the hardest questions of the heart: when does love cross the line of moral obligation? And what does it mean to truly love another?

Praised for her 'personal, detail-rich style' (Glamour), Jodi Picoult infuses this page-turning novel with heart, warmth, and startling candor, taking readers on an unforgettable emotional journey.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Premise is Good....Book Is NOT
I thought this would be a really good book. Wrong. The characters are boring. The story bounces all over the place losing the readers interest. It goes no where fast.

Picoult dropped the ball on this book. It was so bad I couldn't get more than half way through it.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Disappointed
This book was a total disappointment. There were two story lines that could have easily been separate books but together they did not work. The first being a story about Mercy Killing which is a topic that we too may one day struggle with. The other story line was about a weak man who attempts to save his marriage, when his affair is over and he just wants consistency back in his life.

My first introduction to Jodi Picoult was when I read her book "Nineteen Minutes" I recommended ... Read More

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Have Mercy
Just let me say that is very very rare that I put down a book but this one and I quote Dorothy Parker "Should be thrown with great force" Ugh I got halfway through this book hoping against hope that it would grab hold and I would start to like at least one of the characters but none of them from start to finish have any redeeming qualities... That was not the only problem... Why was there so much detail on mundane things that were completely unnecessary to the story... Don't bother!!! This is truly ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Smudged powdered doughnuts!
If you have scored this book anything lower than 5 stars, you have temporary insanity! Picoult engages the reader from the very first page and does a phenomenal job going from different characters which share the same story lines: Jamie and Maggie; Allie and Cam; and Cam and Mia. For the book's length, I was surprised on how well developed the story took place and my lack of boredom from rereading basically the black and white of the plot. First novel I have read from Picoult and cannot wait to pick up ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Love and betrayal...
The interwoven stories of two married couples--Cam and Allie versus Jamie and Maggie. Love and betrayal are major themes that weaves around the main story of a man who loves his wife so much that he kills her.

Jamie honors maggie's wishes and then is overcome with grief and remorse. He confesses to her murder ... Read More
