Product DescriptionPrepare for a decadant feast. A Dirge for the Temporal, Darren Speegle's second collection of fiction, bursts with sensations. Like Baroque architecture, plush velvet furnishings or the richest chocolate truffle dessert, Speegle's prose delights all the senses. This collection heralds the return of the subtly crafted horror tale. A Dirge lingers on the dark mystery of the supernatural, creates the giddy feeling of fear mixed with excitement, that only comes from partial revelations, things half-glimpsed and misty. Like H.P. Lovecraft or Edgar Allen Poe, Speegle's stories belong to the twilight hour, just after the glorious reds and golds of sunset have slipped away giving warning that total darkness is quickly approaching. Old world legend and gothic sensibilities lurk behind every corner. A world of aching beauty and impending doom awaits. Speegle's work is a rare treat to be savored.

"A Dirge For The Temporal" is hard to classify. The cover art would tend to make one believe it is a collection of horror stories, but that would not be accurate. Depending on which story you choose, you could be on another planet, on a space ship, driving or walking through the Black Forest or lost in some enchanted, non-extant German city. There is fantasy here, and horror to be sure, but there is also wonder, and a beauty of language that a lot of the fiction attributed to those genres lacks. ... Read More
Rating: - A classic of modern horror...
I rank Darren Speegle just below Thomas Ligotti when it comes to modern horror writers. And although my knowledge of contemporary horror is still incomplete, the brilliance of "A Dirge for the Temporal" is undeniable. The collection is solid all the way through, and besides "Junkyard Fetish" (which reminded me a little too much of J.G. Ballard's "Crash" in certain aspects), I loved each and every story. So if you haven't done so already, pick up a copy today. By the time you've read the first three ... Read More

What is a Dirge? It is a lingering sense of supernatural, the mystical, and mixed with a bevy of fear and excitement, seen in only half exposure. A Dirge for the Temporal encompasses these meanings and treats us to a blend of subtle temptation and brutal beauty. Thirty-four stories take us through a poignant mind's eye of gifted author Darren Speegle.
Forget formulas here, it is a time travel of past, present, and future, fused in a collection, where you have to question whether you are ... Read More
