From the supplier: A collaboration between Apple Computer Inc., Memphis City Schools and Memphis State University created the Apple Classroom of Tomorrow (ACOT). One component of ACOT is a distance-tutoring project to assist at-risk students in the fifth and sixth grades. Tutors are volunteer Memphis State students who are Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) candidates. Many use the opportunity to conduct thesis studies. The system host is a 512Kbyte Apple Macintosh with 20Mbyte hard disk; students use Apple IIc personal computers. Tutoring assignments are designed to develop writing skills, as well as to expand reading and writing vocabulary. Students and tutors communicated with each other via a bulletin board system (BBS). After the first year, real-time communications capability was added.
