From the supplier: The third Route to the Top study reveals the changing profiles of CEOs at Fortune 100 companies. Average CEO age has dropped from 59 in 1980 only to 57 in 1997. However, the number of CEOs in their 50s went up from 45% to 64% while the number of CEOs in their 60s declined from 50% to just 25%. About 60% have been in their jobs five years of fewer, compared to 40% in 1980, indicating that tenure in the CEO office has declined. Average tenure of CEOs at the companies they lead went down from 26 years in 1980 to 22 years in 1997. Regarding CEO education, only 39% hold MBAs. Ten percent have a Ph.D. while 8% have law degrees. A surprising finding is the lack of global experience, with only 31% of the Fortune 100 CEOs stating significant work experience in Asia, Europe or Latin America. These findings indicate that successful CEOs should have experience in general management, technological proficiency, and ability to deal with changes and different constituencies.
