Alex Cross, who has left the Washington, DC, police force to join the FBI, is called on to take a case that will become the most complex of his career. Around the United States, men and women are being kidnapped without a trace of evidence. Cross begins to investigate the disappearances and discovers that those being kidnapped aren't being held for ransom, but instead are victims of a sinister plot in human trafficking.
