Rating: - Overall, a good introduction to GoLive
***This review is for the Revised Edition*** (FYI, I use the Mac version) Firstly, I have completed the whole book and have NOT found it to filled with errors. There are a couple of areas (specifically I think it was 3) where I had to do a double take and make sure I was following the directions as I was supposed to. Some confusion comes in because the names of some of the palattes are very similar to the names of the work screens, so you need to pay attention if the directions say "Click on the navigation palatte" or "Click on the navigation screen." At a couple points in the tutorial, it got a bit confusing, however it was nothing I could not figure out with some careful reading. It is not a complete reference on GoLive, as I feel I just scratched the surface with the text so far. I would recomemend this book to others basically because there is no other text to learn from. However I would like a more complete exhaustive text that goes deeper into GoLive. One thing I do fault the book for is not having a brief chapter of summary actions like "To fix orphaned files...do the following.."and then list them. There is no summary page or chapter on commands, icons and what they mean. I find myself knowing what I want to do, however I have to look it up to find out detailed instructions on how to do it. Like I said, overall, not a bad book, especially because there isn't anything else out there.
***Update*** I downloaded the free 30 day version of Dreamweaver 8 from the Adobe website to try it for 30 days. I also bought the book "Dreamweaver 8 The Missing Manual" to take it for a test drive. I figured all I would be out of would be the cost of the book. I have only completed 3 chapters and I already like this program much better, and the text is excellent when compared with the text for GoLive. My advice: if you have to use GoLive, use this book and the GoLive Tips book and make the best of your situation. If you have a choice of which progam to use, download Dreamweaver 8 free for 30 days and get "Dreamweaver 8 The Missing Manual" and take it for a test drive. I have already decided to dump GoLive and go with Dreamweaver. Don't make it hard on yourself by sticking with GoLive if you don't have to. Mind you, I am not saying GoLive is a bad program, I am saying documentation is poor, and you will be further ahead by going with Dreamweaver and all the available texts you have access to.
Rating: - Tedious but worthwhile
Just finished all 13 lessons and found it to be extremely worthwhile. I had previously watched the Total Training 'Essentials of GOLIVE CS' and as good as that was (I've started watching again with a new sense of confidence and understanding),there is nothing like actually working through the basic boring bits on my PC. I didn't find the amount of errors others have but I did at times have to read and reread sections to follow along exactly.
Like others reviewing here I wonder why there are no really cool & comprehensive GOLIVE manuals.
Regards
Michael
Rating: - Useful but filled with errors.
If you are new to website construction and are considering Adobe GoLive CS Classroom in a book (REVISED EDITION)as a reference guide...beware!
How could a revised edition still have so many errors (especially as found in Chapter 9), shame on you Adobe Systems.
So much of the web design industry has gone to Dreamweaver, that I wonder if Adobe has lost interest in maintaining an adaquate level of support for this product...and now we hear that Adobe has just purchased Macromedia.
Rating: - useless, don't buy it!
I should've trusted other reviewers here and skip this book. What a waste of money and time.
I am an hardware engineer and know HTML and have built basic websites using HTML coding, but would like to build websites that looks more slick. That's why I purchased Adobe CS ( for the photoshop and illustrator). since goLive is part of the suites I thought I'll learn goLive and redo some of my old sites.
after going through all the chapters, you would only learn a couple of things about this software: where the buttons are, how to use the pick to make links, etc.
it does not explain to you how the software works -- which is what I'd be looking for when I learn a new software.
bad book. worthless.
Rating: - Another Childish Tutorial
This is the worst kind of manual for anyone who is actually inerested in using the software. Like all "tutorial" manuals, you can't get a simple answer to a simple question. The only way to extract information from it is to follow each tredious episode to the end, and even then you will have only brushed across the highlights. Why does Adobe persist in cranking out these useless manuals? I guess it is to force me to buy their tech support plan. And where is a good after-market book on GoLive CS? One which will actually allow me to get the info I need in a timely manner?
