Rating: - Not some dry techno-history...
'Though I find it hard to be objective, (Tom is a very close friend,) I must say that this first book of his is really rather good. A compelling account of the history of the telegraph, from its beginnings as a sonic signalling system through visual signs, and back to sonic, (eventually; it's called the telephone,) signalling. And all in a friendly, personable voice. Tom's patterns of speech are reflected in his writing, and it makes for greatly entertaining reading, instead of just a dry, list-the-dates historico-soporific.
