Rating: - Excellent book to pass the exam
The total time I took, after buying the book, to pass the exam, was 2 months. This book "Head First Servlets and Jsp" by Bryan Basham, Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates" is a true god-send. I went through all the chapters and diligently did all the exercises.
I did all chapter exercises and scored between 40-50% only, in my first attempt. Since they don't tell you how many answers are right, you have to think really hard and sometimes, you have guessed one answer too many or too few.
I also installed the Tomcat 5.0.28 along with the Java SDK (1.4.2_011) and went through the servlet-examples and jsp-examples thoroughly. I used the jsp-examples setup and wrote my own small tags, listeners, Jsps and servlets.
From the exam perspective, here are some tips:
1. Spend time understanding the new JSP 2.0 tags. Our company uses the older tags only, so I had to study and practise this one. There were a number of questions on declarations, using attributes and variables, dynamic attributes etc.
2. The request and response methods are very important. Understanding redirect and dispatcher is a must.
3. The pattern questions are typically easy but you still need to understand what pattern is applied where.
4. Write your own filter so that you understand how they work.
5. The attribute listeners (and there are several) are important. Write your own and understand how they work. Session attribute listeners are very important.
6. Deploy your own web-application (if you have not done so) and make sure you understand what goes where.
Rating: - Head First Servlets and JSP: Passing the Sun Certified Web Component Developer Exam (SCWCD)
This is the best book I have ever read. If you are busy and you look at the number of pages for this book, you can not think of buying it. But I purchased this book because the reviews for the other SCWCD books were all disappointing. If you want to learn Servlets and JSPs, and pass the SCWCD, buy this book. I like the way the authors explain the topics in the book, examples given and exercises. It's actually a very interesting book, you learn things while you are reading a very fun book. You don't even realize you reading a programming book. The authors have a very special teaching methodology I have ever found in any other book. I wish if they could be able to write all the books I need to read.
Rating: - Excellent Book
I have already read this book to some extent and i love this book. It discusses the details about java servlets very thoroughly. It also compares the advantages and disadvantages of java sevlets over other concepts -- which is very nice.
But it is not a book for those who would like to learn the basic concept about java servlets in 2-5 days. It needs time to complete the whole book. It is not quick learning guide like DUMMIES.
Rating: - excellent purchase
I knew it and now I feel it, that "Head First Servlets and JSP" is written by real people who know the concept from architechture/delevloper point of view.
Although book does not go in all details neccessary for real world(No single book can go), But give more enough confidence and knowledge to explore later on.
I recommend this book for starters definitley and for people who always knew Servlets and JSP but felt there is something they are missing !! Yes it gives a PUNCH!!
