Rating: - Great learning tool
Being completely new to C# I was a little concerned with all the 5-star reviews touting this book as being so great for intermediate and advanced level programmers. However, I decided to take a chance on this book since it does come from Microsoft and was very happy with my decision! While this book does get a little too much into the esoterics of the compiler-generated IL code for my taste, at least the author only shows IL in order to illustrate why you would use a particular C# verb over another or how to code more efficiently in .NET. I especially like the fact that the each chapter begins by explaining the topic matter and why I should care about it and then progressively gets more advanced as the chapter moves along. All in all, the book is a great learning tool for both .NET and C# programming.
Rating: - Great book
My english is not very goodly but I write to state that Mr Acker book is the best of all c# books I own. I write .net programs for 3 years now and have no doubt this book is best learning tool for anyone doing profssional programming for .net.
Rating: - A+ Book for Professionals
I've been using C# since the 2000 PDC and can tell you that this book still provided (and continues to provide) information that even I didn't know. I do agree that it's not an ideal book for beginners. However, if you're a professsional programmer and either intermediate or advanced with .NET and C#, then this book is absolutely indispensable.
Rating: - Absolute GOLD!!
Having read just about every highly rated C# book on Amazon, I can definitely state that Tom Archer and Andrew Whitechapel have easily the best book on the market. I will caution the buyer that this book is NOT a Windows Forms or Visual Studio book. It *is* a fantastic book on the language and several integral BCL classes the authors thought are important to any C# developer.
I would highly recommend this book for intermediate to advanced C# developers because no matter how much you think you know, you'll find yourself learning more each daywith this book.
For the beginner level C# person, I would recommend buying a Step by Step book on C# and this book because while this book may be too much for you to begin with, once you get under way, you'll need this book as an invaluable reference.
Rating: - Best C# examples of any book offset minor typos
I was a little put of where a couple of file names were misnamed in the first chapter, but the author immediately replied to my email to let me know that it was a last minute edit change - something we're all too familiar with in software development. Beyond that, I was impressed with the incredible level of detail on subjects such as delegates, interfaces and com interop. I also like the fact that the author takes the time to help out readers going waaaaay beyond his call of duty in doing so. The incredible level of detail and advanced nature of the book plus his willingnes to help out an intermediate level C# person like me bumped his overall grade from what was going to be a 4 to a solid 5.
