Books Microsoft Visual Basic .NET Step by Step--Version 2003 (Step By Step (Microsoft))

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Not for practical development
I bought this book considering the step by step nature of the book. Book is well written but the biggest problem is that the examples it presents are too simple. If you are a beginner who needs to know vb.net its good. But if you are an experienced professional and want to spend money on something that can be useful in practical real life projects, the book is useless. The final word is that this book is ONLY for people who have never used VB at all! For people who have worked on VB before, it is frustrating!!!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Great Book for MS programming beginners
I am an experienced HTML, PHP and Javascript developper and I wanted to break into MS technologies and perhaps get certified for 70-305.

I found this book and excellent introduction to MS technologies and using the Visual Studio IDE.

Also it is a great example of how to write a solid primer for a programming language. You wont come away from this book being an expert. But you will no longer be in the dark about VB.net.

My only critisism would be that the ADO and DB sections were a little on the light side.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Good Beginner Book, Not For Experienced Programmers
A good book for beginners who have little knowledge of VB. I was looking for a good book for reference when stepping up from VB6, only the last few chapters offered me any gained knowledge. I recommend this book for those who are new to programming, but this book is not for experienced programmers. I won't discount the quality of the book because of my poor selection!

Also - another good read is Visual C#.Net Step By Step.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Excellent for begineers and old hands
I have not done any programming for some time, in fact the last lot I did was using Pascal and Fortran many years ago. I found this book excellent, it provides good worked examples and allows users to understand the fundamentals of VB Net and Object Orientated Programming. This would be an ideal book for those who want to learn programming using VB Net(from a begineers perspective) or for those old guys who have done some programming to learn about this exciting programming environment.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A RELIABLE INTRODUCTORY
The name of this book is consistent with its contents. It provides a comprehensive step-by-step way of learning the entire Visual Basic .NET procedures. Beginners are its main target. Advanced users need not waste time and money on it. In fact, the only way a non-beginner would enjoy it is by using it as a quick memory refresher.
In addition to its simplified Visual Basic .NET language, it treated the fundamentals like the Visual Studio, XML Web Services and object-oriented programming principles with enviable expertise.
This is one of the most remarkable and reliable introductory texts currently on sale. However, expect to find some its topics a bit summarized.
