Rating: - Comprehensive and accessible
I received this book in the mail last week...First impressions: very comprehensive and accessible. A huge amount of content here. A success for New Riders.
Rating: - Real-life solutions
This is the book that not only teaches you the basics of servlets/JSP/EJB but also is full of real-life codes that are applicabel to solving real programming problems. Examples are in abundance and most really do something, not simply sending text to the browser. Take the client-side scripts for user input validation as an example, you can copy and paste to use them in your own JSP pages.
Kurniawan is also an excellent teacher. I was particularly grateful after reading Chapter 5 (Session Management). When I first learned servlet programming, I found it hard to understand what session management is, but Kurnawan used comparison with a telephone call to describe session management. The way he explains things is really amazing. I became more confident after reading this book.
Rating: - Learning Web Programming Fast And Easy
Learning WEb programming is very easy with this book because the author explains all the concepts extremely well and examples are plenty and work well. There are more than 300 code listings in the book, providing code for almost anything you need: session management, database accesss from servlets/JSP pages, online e-books, file-upload, file download, beans, EJB, JMS, JavaScript, etc. This is one of the better books in Java programming and really speeds up the learning process.
Rating: - Programmer/Analyst
This book is a must-have for those who want to learn to program for the web with Java. This is one of the best book I ever bought. Examples are well designed and explained. I particularly like the fact that the author gives step-by-step instructions on how to reproduce the examples. If you're new to Java, buy this book first. Your money is worth three times.
Rating: - "4" for content, "1" for execution
Ouch! If there is a book out there with more typographical errors, i sure haven't seen one. This book averages one error per two pages. I won't blame the author for these errors, as they should have been caught by the editors and proofreaders (SHAMELESS PLUG: New Riders, i'd be happy to proofread any book for you).
As for actual content, WOW! It's one of the top five java books in my library.
If you can tolerate reading a book that has a plethora of typos, this is a book for you. otherwise, maybe wait until the 2nd edition..
