Conforming to the Open Standards have become not only popular but necessary with the advent of web services, in the internet world. So, a reliable contract between applications is almost as necessary as a web browser is to browse the internet because existing modes of data transportation or storage like a database or a file is no longer capable of delivering the data at the required speed or structure. Hence, XML was touted(!), first, by W3C.org and then on by the industry leaders as the all new thing in open standard modes of communication and interaction between applications, client-server and between web applications.
