Microsoft today attempted to exorcize the interoperability bogeymen that have haunted it since it was first discovered to be using secret APIs 20 years ago, bogeymen that now quote European antitrust law at it and carry writs from the Court of First Instance in Luxembourg. To avoid further confrontation with the European Commission, which opened a broad investigation of Microsoft's interoperability last month, the company said it would voluntarily open up all the APIs and communications protocols in its biggest revenue producers now and forever. Ingres, the open source database, and Pentaho, the open source business intelligence alternative, have partnered up. They say they're going to integrate key product lines and together chase the BI market, saying it's hot. LogicWorks has become MySQL's first authorized hosting partner in the US. It intends to offer customers a managed MySQL Enterprise database for delivering mission-critical apps, making sure at its end that service levels are met. Both Windows Server 2008 and the Vista Service Pack 1 were released to manufacturing Monday with a perspective availability date of sometime in March. Called a bug-fixer almost universally, APCMag says that, based on version and build number, the Service Pack swaps out the original Vista kernel for the new unreleased Longhorn kernel on Windows Server 2008. In response to the commercial release of Microsoft Visual Studio 2008, the latest version of the most popular Integrated Development Environment for Microsoft .NET Developers, Software FX announced that it has updated and changed the name of its Chart FX for Visual Studio 2005 product to a more simplified Chart FX 7. 'Not only is the name more appropriate now that we have two versions of Visual Studio in the market, but it is more in-line with future product announcements coming from Software FX,' said Rene Garcia, president of Software FX.
